Jewish Federation wants citizens to speak out at sentencing of Eric Carbonaro
GOSHEN – The Jewish Federation of Orange County wants the community to speak out to the court before Eric Carbonaro is sentenced next month in connection with the desecration of the Temple Beth Shalom Cemetery in the Town of Warwick.
Carbonaro, 18, pled guilty to conspiracy as a hate crime and tampering with physical evidence in connection with the October 2016 spray painting of anti-Semitic slogans and Nazi symbols on walls and gravestones at the cemetery.
Suzanne Leon, the executive director of the Jewish Federation, is urging all Jews to submit victim impact statements to Orange County Court Judge Craig Steven Brown before the sentencing date of May 14.
“We would like to see some measure of justice for this hate crime,” she said. “We want to give the public a message that we are not going to tolerate this type of anti-Semitism or hate crimes against Jewish people in our community.”
Leon said the federation would like to see Carbonaro receive some jail time as well as sensitivity training or Holocaust education.
