NEWBURGH – A veteran Newburgh city police officer died Friday morning, hours before six new cops were sworn in.
Police Chief Douglas Solomon made the announcement just prior to the new officers being sworn in at city hall.

“This is sort of a bittersweet moment for the police department as we lost Sgt. Paul Horaz to an illness early this morning; a 28-year veteran of the police department. It is a bittersweet moment for us,” Solomon said.
Newburgh City Manager Michael Ciaravino told friends and relatives that the new officers were entering a well-respected career.
“One of the most hallowed professions that is defined as the thin blue line that sometimes separates chaos from order in the civilized republic,” he said.
The manager noted the Newburgh department has become a model of policing for other law enforcement around the country and world.
Earlier in the week, four new officers were sworn in to the Town of Wallkill Police Department.
