NEW CITY – Rockland County Executive Edwin Day signed a bond resolution on Monday for $29.5 million to build a new county highway department facility in Chestnut Ridge. The county will also bond for three other projects.
The new highway department operation will include an office building, large vehicle storage building, repair shop, cold storage building, salt shed, truck wash and fuel station and is expected to increase the life expectancy of county vehicles by five years, translating to about $190,000 per year.
The county is also going to bond for a new document management software system, a playground for court-ordered visitation at the Pomona complex in service to child and parent visitation requirements; and repurposing of the Pomona complex to place all health and human services functions in one location.
Day said these projects, approved by the county legislature, are a testament to the significantly improved fiscal condition of the county.
“Our fiscal discipline has paid off. We are paying down bonds that we took out years ago and thanks to our county’s conservative fiscal management over the last four years, Moody’s Investors’ recently rated Rockland’s bonds an A2; that was a double bump in the category, which is almost unheard of.”
Because of the improved bond rating, Day said all of the projects will be accomplished without having to raise county taxes.
