WAPPINGER – The Child Victims Act may not have survived the state budget process, but it is not dead.
Lex Filipowski of Wappinger, who as a child in Middletown was molested by a priest, said there is still an opportunity to pass the bill, which would provide a one-year “window” for formerly abused children to face their abusers in the legal system.
“We, myself and other survivors, have been very, very vocal to let people know, number one that the bill is still alive and well and that there is an opportunity for it to pass yet and to basically help protect victims of child abuse,” Filipowski said. “Right now we are being victimized as well children who may be victimized in the future if this bill doesn’t pass.”
For several years the bill has made it through the Democrat-controlled Assembly but was held up in the Republican Senate.
