ALBANY – State Senator William Larkin (R, Cornwall-on-Hudson) will make what his office called “a major announcement” this coming Tuesday detailing “a significant improvement” to the Newburgh City Fire Department.
The state budget was approved Friday night and Larkin is expected to announce funding for the fire department, which faces the loss of a dozen firefighters when a federal grant expires this summer.
It has been estimated that it will cost about $500,000 to retain the firefighters through the end of this year and another $1 million to fund them for all of 2019. Additional Orange County sales tax revenue of over $500,000 may be applied by the city to keep the men on the job this year, but finding money going forward has been the issue.
