The sentences are to run consecutively for a total prison term of 21 1/3 to 24 years in prison.
Carlos Melendez, 29, was convicted after a jury trial in January of assault, attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon for having struck two men in the City of Newburgh with a padlock and chain.
He was also sentenced to two and one-third to seven years in prison on the weapon charge, which will run concurrent to the other two sentences.
Early on the morning of May 20, 2017 near 478 Broadway, Melendez allegedly used the padlock and chain as a flail to strike the two me in the head. One man suffered life-threatening physical injuries and required hospitalization.
“The community will be safer during the two decades this defendant is in prison,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “This defendant’s conduct could easily have resulted in the loss of life and is deserving of a lengthy sentence of incarceration.”
