GOSHEN – Orange County
Mental Health Commissioner Darcie Miller said every time a student takes
his life, it is “tragic, horrible and potentially preventable.
Miller said her office provides all school districts in the county with
a suicide prevention guide, what to do should an incident occur, and provides
the “question, persuade, refer” and other services.
“We have a Friends Help Friends campaign where we have palm cards that go out to the student body that gives them information about what signs and symptoms to look for and what to do if a friend discloses to them that they are feeling hopeless and meet any of those signs on the palm cards and encourage them to connect with a supportive adult,” she said.
The county also has a Friends Help Friends suicide app available for Apple
and Android smartphones.
On Monday a student committed suicide at Storm King School in Cornwall-on-Hudson.
