NEWBURGH – Three people
took last Saturday’s open competitive civil service exam for Newburgh
city police chief.

While the names of those who take such tests are not made public, provisional
Chief Douglas Solomon did take the exam.

There must be a minimum of three people to pass civil service exams for
them to be certified and a candidate chosen from among the top three scorers.

In this case, all three candidates who took the test must pass it for
it to be certified.

Solomon, who was recently appointed subject to his successfully passing
the open competitive exam, most recently served as police chief in the
neighboring City of Beacon. Prior to that, he was police chief in the
Village of Monticello.
If Solomon passes, but one or neither of the other candidates do, he
can still be named permanent chief.

Results of this test are not expected to be known for several weeks if
not months.
