CARMEL – A wide variety of breakfast fare was on the menu Saturday at the Carmel Veterans Hall when dozens of Putnam County residents enjoyed a delicious meal and warm camaraderie in support of the county’s Service Medal Project.
It was on October 14, 1919 that the former Putnam Board of Supervisors proclaimed a commemoration celebration by honoring all World War I service members. Eleven days later, more than 200 men and women who served overseas were honored with a parade, celebration and the award of a specially designed Putnam County Service Medal.
Now, almost 100 years later, the Putnam County Service Medal Advisory Panel will be issuing medals to current and past veterans living in the county who were honorably discharged from the armed services.
As many as 5,000 veterans reside in the county. Those interested in receiving a medal must apply through an application available at the County Clerk’s Office.
