ALBANY – Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R, Deerpark), whose district includes the Village of Kiryas Joel, said on Thursday that he will co-sponsor legislation to accelerate the creation of the Town of Palm Tree.
That new town will include a portion of the Town of Monroe coupled with the existing Village of Kiryas Joel.
The new municipality is set to take effect in January 2020, but Assemblyman James Skoufis (D, Woodbury) and Senator William Larkin (R, Cornwall-on-Hudson) have introduced legislation to move that up by one year to January 2019.
The measure also includes additional state aid for the Monroe-Woodbury School District to compensate for the loss of revenue as a result of Monroe land being annexed to the village.
“This is a win-win for the residents of the Town of Monroe and the residents that will live in Palm Tree,” Brabenec said. “This legislation ensures that in the case the district loses significant property tax revenue, the district will see additional state aid to preserve the high quality of education we provide in Orange County.”
