KINGSTON – In the wake of the massacre in Florida, Kingston City School District officials are reminding parents and students to be mindful of how quickly rumors can spread on social media and how damaging and distracting gossip can be.
“Following up on false leads and misinformation can take valuable time and focus away from other student issues and can even distract from events that might truly pose a safety threat,” school district Safety and Prevention Office officials wrote on the district’s Facebook page. “When discussing situations involving our students on social media or in other forums, please remember to avoid sharing or repeating information that might not be true. Oftentimes, it is unlikely you have all of the facts needed for an accurate understanding of a situation.”
At the same time, the school officials encourage students to embrace the practice of “see something, say something.” They should be assured that it is okay to bring a concern to an adult even if it does not pan out.
