CITY OF RYE – A Rye City contractor will be on site today with a camera to survey the sewer lines under Interstate 95 in an effort to identify the source of elevated levels of enterococci bacteria in a storm drain catch basin. The raised levels in the area of Theodore Fremd and Locust avenues were discovered through sampling from Save the Sound in December.
The investigation since then has focused on the possibility of a leak in the City of Rye sanitary sewer line buried deep under I-95 draining into the Thruway Authority drainage structures under I-95.
On Friday, January 26 Rye and Thruway crews exposed buried sanitary sewer and drainage manhole covers located within the I-95 right-of-way, making access to the pipe system possible.
A meeting on Friday between Westchester County Health and state environmental conservation officials said no concerns related to public health were raised.
