MID-HUDSON – As bad as heroin is, when it is laced with fentanyl, it kills even quicker. That is evidenced by six drug deaths in Orange County last week.
Ulster County Sheriff Paul VanBlarcum said the drug situation around the region is getting worse.
“Now we are getting into where dealers are selling straight fentanyl,”
VanBlarcum said. “So where it used to be they would mix it with
heroin, but now we are finding straight fentanyl being sold on the street.”
The opioid reversal drug Narcan is becoming more available, but that is not enough to fight the epidemic. Police are taking a multi-prong approach including enforcement, education and treatment.
