Stewart reaches record numbers of passengers in 2017

STEWART AIRPORT – The number of passengers flying at Stewart International
Airport at Newburgh in 2017 broke the 400,000 mark for the first time
since the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey took over the facility
10 ½ years ago.

The 61 percent increase over 2016 levels is attributed to the European
service aboard Norwegian Airways, which last summer began operating nonstop
flights to five cities.

Allegiant Air, which flies to Florida and Myrtle Beach, has also expanded
its service.

Stewart Business Development Director Michael Torelli told the Stewart
Airport Commission on Tuesday that those numbers are expected to grow
even further in 2018.

“Some of our forecasts are showing obviously more increases with
a full year of international service. There will be more domestic service
with Myrtle Beach coming back. As long as these trends continue these
numbers will stay at these levels and continue to rise,” he said.
The number of passengers using Stewart in 2017 totaled 448,323 compared
with 275,103 in 2016.

Norwegian Airways officials have said they are exploring additional routes
at Stewart and Allegiant is exploring year-round service to Myrtle Beach.
Right now it runs from spring through fall.
