MONTICELLO – A 10-year-old
New Canaan, Connecticut boy has died while driving with family through
Sullivan County.

Nico Mallozzi and his family had traveled to Western New York for a hockey
tournament and while on the way back as they traveled on Route 17 through
Sullivan County on Sunday, January 14, he died, school officials in New
Canaan said.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bryan Luizzi said it has been confirmed
that he had been diagnosed with influenza B strain of the flu. “What
we do not know, however, is if the flu causes Nico’s passing,”
Luizzi wrote on the district’s website.

A GoFundMe page has been set up and as of Tuesday, the goal of $100,000
has been exceeded with close to $175,000 pledged.

“Nico was a wonderful, friendly child, known throughout West School
as the voice of the afternoon announcements that concluded each day,”
said school Principal Jan Murphy. “He will be sadly missed and fondly
remembered.”
