MONTICELLO – The process
has begun to transfer the first 13 zombie properties to the newly formed
Sullivan County Land Bank Corporation. The properties, all of which include
structures, are either owned by the county or are in the Village of Monticello
and have either been seized for failure to pay taxes or taken back by
banks because of mortgage forfeiture.
Land Bank Corporation Vice Chairwoman Jacquie Leventoff said the corporation, formed last year, has a $920,000 state grant to assist in property remediation before sale.
“People are interested in Monticello and Sullivan County so we don’t feel we will have a problem to take down the property to either re-sell the vacant land or re-sell the rehabbed property,” Leventoff said. “These are properties that had asbestos; that had reasons that other people would not be interested in them. That’s why the land bank is getting involved to remediate all of that so now we can sell them.”
The Sullivan County Land Bank Corporation was modeled after the successful City of Newburgh Land Bank.
