NEW ROCHELLE – City and
school officials have clamped down on violence in the City of New Rochelle
following three violent incidents involving high school students, two
off school grounds and the most recent in a classroom.

“Coming in such quick succession, they pose an urgent challenge
that commands our full attention,” according to a joint statement
coming from Board of Education President Rachel Relkin, Superintendent
of Schools Brian Osborne, Mayor Noam Bramson and City Manager Chuck Strome.
To address the concerns, officials are taking a number of immediate steps:

• Uniformed police officers have been assigned to the primary access
points around the high school and a uniformed presence will augment a
long-standing practice of assigning resources to areas with a high concentration
of student traffic.

• Police presence and visibility along North Avenue south of the
high school will be enhanced during hours when students tend to congregate
or travel to and from school. That presence will augment a long-standing
practice of assigning resources to areas with a high concentration of
student traffic.

• Access to the high school will be strictly controlled and enforced.
The officials said the incidents have raised “broader questions
about security protocols and associated policies.” As a result,
the officials are initiating a “top-to-bottom, high-level review
of all practices, procedures, and policies that may be directly or indirectly
related to student safety.”
