WASHINGTON – Democratic Hudson Valley Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D, NY-17) announced on Tuesday she introduced legislation to restore the state and local tax (SALT) deduction, which was reduced to a maximum of $10,000 in the Republican tax overhaul signed into late last month.
Lowey teamed up with Republican Long Island Congressman Peter King (R, NY02) in an attempt to go back to the old open-ended tax deduction.
King acknowledged that gaining support and changing the law will not happen overnight, but it could be used as leverage in the future.
“When the time comes when they have to get our votes and it also could be when other members, for instance, Republicans in California or other states, for whatever reason voted for this in the first place, if they start to feel the heat, that’s when this could really be used to help us,” he said. “I don’t see it happening this week or next week, but we have to be ready and keep the pressure on.”
Lowey said her constituents in Rockland and Westchester and King’s in Nassau and Suffolk are everyday people.
“Our communities are full of hard working Americans who don’t quite register in President Trump’s income bracket,” she said.
Governor Cuomo chimed in on the Lowey-King effort saying they are “doing
what they were elected to do – protect New Yorkers.”
