HIGHLAND FALLS – Police
are investigating the theft of two safes from Highlands Town Hall in Highland
Falls.

Police are mum on their progress in solving the crime, but one source
late Wednesday said a male under the age of 18 was arrested.

The perpetrator removed an air conditioner from a window in Town Supervisor
Robert Livsey’s first-floor office on Tuesday night, climbed in
and stole a small safe from under his desk.

He also broke into the court clerk’s second-floor office and stole
her safe. That one contained roughly $2,000, but Livsey said if his is
cracked, the burglar will find nothing but a bunch of “junk papers.”

Since his safe, which is the size of a small refrigerator the likes of
one in a college dorm was out of view, Livsey believes the heist was “an
inside job.”

Town Hall does not have a burglary alarm system, but does have one for
fire. Livsey said the town will spend the extra money to have one installed
now.
Town of Highlands, Village of Highland Falls and State Police are investigating
the burglary.
