Car hits fire hydrant, floods Port Jervis storage facility

PORT JERVIS – A storage facility on Jersey Avenue in Port Jervis was flooded on Monday after a car struck a nearby fire hydrant, Mayor Kelly Decker said.
City crews responded to the large water leak.
“By the time they were contacted, the water department got the water shut off, but there had already been hundreds of gallons of water than had gone into the storage facility,” Decker said, noting the fire department responded and pumped the water out.
Officials urged residents to run their tap water for a few minutes before using it to flush out any remaining discoloration from the broken hydrant and subsequent leak.
