VALHALLA – The ceremonial
swearing in of Democrat George Latimer as Westchester County executive
on Sunday, in part, turned into a party pep rally for the Democratic Party
to take back Washington and bring civility back to national politics.
State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman took a subtle jab at Republican President Trump.
“George Latimer is a grown up and at a time when America is crying out for grown up leadership, you are providing here in Westchester,” Schneiderman said.
State Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins (D-Yonkers) was also critical of the administration.
“We’ve got to stand up to Trump and we’ve got stand up for us,” she told the overflow grow of Latimer well-wishers at Westchester Community College.
Representative Eliot Engel (D, NY-16), ranking member of the House International Relations Committee, also criticized the administration.\
“We cannot allow this president and this administration to soil what we have built in over 200 years and allow this president to try to get to the very core of our democracy and try to destroy it,” Engel said.
Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo said there is a reason for the Latimer win.
“Don’t be surprised when government assaults peoples’
rights, if people get upset and people move to defend themselves, because
that’s what this has been,” Cuomo said. “This is an
assault on peoples’ rights on every level on every level and on
every group.”
Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D, NY-17) emceed the two-hour event saying she looks forward to the time when the Democrats take back both houses of Congress and the White House.
