TOWN OF NEWBURGH – The driver killed in a one-car crash in the Town of Newburgh on New Year’s morning was an English teacher at James I. O’Neill High School in Highland Falls.
Christopher Page, 27, lived in the hamlet of Wallkill.
Superintendent of the Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery Central School District, Dr. Frank Sheboy said they have lost “a member of the family” with the death of Page, who taught at O’Neill for four years and coached football.
“He inspired everybody – students, staff, faculty – to achieve to ever higher greater potential and we are going to feel his loss for some time now,” Sheboy said. “He was an exceptional teacher; he was a caring individual, caring young man who was willing to do anything for his colleagues, students, always willing to pitch in and do something. If we needed a class covered or needed a coach, he would step up and do it.”
Lt. James Nenni said Page, who was alone, was northbound on Route 300 at the intersection of Union Avenue when he failed to negotiate a curve and hit the pole. He died at the scene.
There were no witnesses to the 6:45 a.m. crash and the cause is unknown. Police are asking anyone with information about the accident to call them at 845-564-1100.
