PORT JERVIS – Residents
in Port Jervis can expect about a $9 per month increase in their city
property tax with a new budget that is anticipated to be approved tonight.
Mayor Kelly Decker said the property tax rate has been whittled down to an 8.13 percent increase. When he first proposed the city’s 2018 spending plan months ago, it included a 15 percent tax hike, but that was reduced to 9.8 percent, later to 9.38 percent.
Decker said four percent of that increase is to cover a bond for major
projects including the Tri-State Bridge and the downtown Promenade.
Another three percent is due to a state health insurance increase.
“New York State wants you to stay within the two percent tax cap although it is not really two percent, yet they give us a health insurance jump of almost nine percent,” Decker said.
Proposed raises for the mayor and council members have been removed from the budget.
Decker says the city will also be negotiating with its police union and CSEA in the new year and he hopes to bring costs down.
