Man arrested for setting fire that destroyed house

STOCKPORT – A 2 ½-month investigation into a fire that destroyed
a house in the Town of Stockport on October 1 has resulted in the arrest
of a Stuyvesant man on an arson charge.

William Travis III, 31, was remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu
of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000.

It is alleged that Travis drove to 290 Route 25 in Stockport and started
the fire that completely destroyed the home.

Travis was arrested on Wednesday, December 20 following an investigation
by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s
Office, Stockport Fire Department, Columbia County Cause and Origin Team
and state Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

The investigation is continuing and Sheriff David Bartlett said more charges
are possible. He urged anyone who may have information to assist in the
case to cal the Criminal Investigation Branch at 518-828-4316.

Authorities did not provide a motive for the arson or how the fire was
started.
