Former federal court soon to become a city court

MIDDLETOWN – The State Office of Court Administration has finally granted permission for Middletown to construct an addition on the former federal courthouse it bought for its city court.
A year-and-a-half after local officials announced they would purchase
the building, the state has given the okay for construction of a second
courtroom in the facility.
Mayor Joseph DeStefano said work will begin on the expansion project in the new year.
“Our reimbursement of $2.2 of a $2.7 million grant has been submitted and approved,” the mayor said. “We are waiting for final approval on design and then we will go to building and construction plans and bid specs so that will be a 2018 project.”
Court is currently held at City Hall, but two courtrooms are needed and there is only one at the current location.
Middletown needed state approval to construct a second courtroom on the
former federal courthouse it purchased.
