NEW CITY – “Rockland County’s firefighter and first responder community has suffered a terrible loss,” County Executive Edwin Day said Tuesday, commenting on the line-of-duty death of Nyack firefighter David Jahnes. The volunteer firemen died Monday while on duty responding to a call on North Broadway.
Jahnes, 58, had been a member of the Nyack Fire Patrol Company since November 2001. He served as company captain from 2008 until 2011.
Day, who is a retired police officer, said he knows “that the work we do is inherently dangerous.” He said even a routine call like the one to which Jahnes and his crew responded on Monday poses dangers.
“Firefighters like David Jahnes understood these dangers and volunteer their time out of a selfless desire to protect their neighbors and their communities.”
