TOWN OF ROSENDALE – A collision between a snowmobile and an ATV on private property near Tillson Road in the Town of Rosendale on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of the man on the snowmobile.
The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office reported that at 1:37 p.m. deputies and Rosendale Police responded to a report of the crash.
Investigation revealed Daniel Petras, 25, was traveling north through a field parallel to a wood line when an ATV operated by Joshua Bennett, 23, entered the field through a gate into the path of the snowmobile. The snowmobile struck the ATV causing serious, but non-life threatening injuries to Bennett.
Petras, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene.
Police said the ability for the operators to see one another was obstructed by foliage along the wood line.
The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the State Police, Rosendale Police and fire departments from Tillson, Rosendale and Rifton, as well as Mobile Life Support Services.
