POUGHKEEPSIE – A handful of clergy and community activists held their 22nd annual holiday candlelight vigil in front of the Dutchess County Office building in Poughkeepsie on Thursday evening and launched their Poor People’s Campaign.
Rev. Edwrin Sutton, pastor of the Smith Metropolitan AME Zion Church in Poughkeepsie, was highly critical of the federal tax bill just approved in Congress.
“This bill was generated by way of many so-called Christians; I am a Christian. The ideology of this bill was conjured by white evangelicals; I am an evangelical,” he said. “The conflict is this – the term Christian means to be like Christ. It is absolutely, unequivocally fake news when one calls himself or herself Christ-like when one fails to be like Christ.”
Rev. Sutton said taxes will increase for the middle class and decrease
for the wealthy under the Republican plan.

The annual vigil was coordinated by County Legislator Joel Tyner (center, gray coat) and Rev Sutton (hat and scarf)
