TOWN OF WALLKILL – Police are investigating the hacking of customer accounts at the Town of Wallkill branch of the Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union. Wallkill Chief Robert Hertman said there were a handful of cases of ATM skimming at the facility on Route 211 in early December.
Town Police are working with State Police investigators to catch the thieves who apparently attached a skimming device to an automatic teller machine to hack into accounts and capture the customers’ personal banking information.
One member, who wanted to remain anonymous, said her debit card was denied twice and when she called the credit union to find out why, she was told there had been an attempted hack into her account.
Credit union spokeswoman Lisa Morris said they have “full faith” in law enforcement’s ability to solve the case, although she would not go into specifics of the nature of the issue.
The institution conducts daily inspections of its system, she said.
Customers are not liable for any losses that may occur due to illegal activity, Morris said.  She advised members to sign up for credit union or VISA alerts to electronically monitor their accounts as a safeguard against any potential compromises.
Chief Hertman said his department has been investigating a number of
similar incidents at other banks in the town in recent months.
