ORANGETOWN – The Town of Orangetown has purchased 2,260 street lights in the unincorporated areas from Orange and Rockland Utilities, allowing the town to move forward with converting the lights to LED fixtures. That will save the town hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy and maintenance costs in the coming years and reduce greenhouse gas production by 690 tons per year, the equivalent of removing 130 cars from the road, said Town Supervisor Andrew Stewart.
Work to convert the lights has begun in the eastern part of the town – Palisades, Sparkill and Tappan – and will progress north and west in the coming weeks.
Stewart said all fixtures should be converted by early spring.
