WASHINGTON – Legislation drafted by Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY-18) that will study the long-term effects of PFOS and PFOA in water has been signed into law by the president.
The measure was prompted by the discovery of the chemical in the Newburgh
city drinking water supply over a year-and-a-half ago, said the representative.
“We don’t have good federal research on what the long-term
are of being exposed to these chemicals and we need to know that, so that
will get that study going,” Maloney said. “This won’t
stop or get in the way of any of the efforts we have undertaken to get
money to clean up the existing mess and the water is still safe; it doesn’t
get in the way of anything.”
The Centers for Disease Control five-year study would be funded with $7 million.
