PORT JERVIS – Tourism is a money-maker for the City of Port Jervis, and one that is likely to grow if plans for a whitewater park in the Delaware River pan out.
The city is now on record directing that tourism revenue be used for tourism. Councilman and Tourism Liaison, George Belcher, authored a resolution.
“Port Jervis tourism, through its events, may generate a surplus of revenues over expenses and whereas, the Port Jervis Common Council desires to use these funds in a future period for the purpose of promoting tourism, public relations, marketing and/or the purchase of assets to promote same,” Belcher said, in presenting a motion to treat any surplus amount in the tourism account as deferred revenue for future use.
The resolution was adopted unanimously during a brief regular council meeting Monday night.
The council hopes to wrap up the business of 2017 at its final meeting which will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20. A vote on the budget is planned.
Only one person commented Monday night during the second public hearing on the budget that would increase the tax levy over eight percent.
