SHAWANGUNK – Ulster County and local officials cut the ribbon Monday on the new Stewart Crowell Bridge across the Wallkill River on Bruyn Turnpike in the hamlet of Wallkill.
The more than 100-year-old bridge was closed this past summer for a major overhaul and now features wider lanes, enhanced lighting and improved sidewalks for increased pedestrian safety and ADA compliance.
County Executive Michael Hein, Legislature Chairman Kenneth Ronk and Shawangunk Town Supervisor John Valk were among the first to walk across the bridge on Monday.
The new bridge “is the latest example of Ulster County’s unprecedented investment in our infrastructure,” said Hein.
Ronk, who announced the bridge would be dedicated as the Stewart Crowell Bridge, said the county worked with the community “to craft the bridge that would best fit our needs.”
Crowell, a teacher and dedicated citizen who passed away in 2014, served on the Shawangunk/Gardiner Historical Society and was appointed to the Collections/Historic Houses Committee of the Huguenot Historical Society in New Paltz;
