LIVINGSTON MANOR – Catskill Mountainkeeper is praising the Delaware River Basin Commission’s revised regulations that prohibit high volume hydraulic fracturing in hydrocarbon bearing rock formations in the Delaware River Basin.
The Delaware River Watershed comprises portions of four states – New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
Mountainkeeper Associate Director Wes Gillingham said there are issues.
“There are some concerns, though, about how they put forward this proposal. It included regulations,” Gillingham said. “They say they are going to discourage wastewater importation and water withdrawals, but what ‘discourage’ actually means on the ground when you are talking about trucks bringing contaminated water to a waste streaming facility in the Delaware basin.”
That is highly concerning to Catskill Mountainkeeper.
The proposed new regulations will be the subject of four public hearings in Pennsylvania next month. Two of the hearings will be in Wayne County, across the Delaware River from Sullivan County.
