TOWN OF GREENBURGH – Town officials in Greenburgh want to tackle the problem of car larcenies that has been plaguing the region and they are sending out the “lock your doors” message loud and clear with lawn signs.
“We are placing the lawn signs around town because we want to constantly remind people of the importance of taking this action,” said Town Supervisor Paul Feiner. “In addition, the police department is creating a Twitter feed and will remind people every night at 9 p.m. to lock their cars, if they subscribed to the feed.”
The police are also assigning unmarked cars to neighborhoods throughout the town in a proactive move.
Police recently arrested two Mount Vernon teenagers for car larcenies and Feiner said during interviews with them, it was learned that some 70 teenagers from Mount Vernon leave the city every night and go to other Westchester communities to steal from unlocked vehicles.
The problem of thefts from unlocked vehicles is not limited to Greenburgh. Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Kingston and other communities face the same problem. Residents across the Hudson Valley and Catskills are reminded to lock their car doors and not leave any valuables in plain sight.
Another problem, particularly during the holidays, is theft of delivered parcels from front porches. If possible, arrange delivery at a time when you will be home, or have the package delivered to a neighbor or friend who will be home.
