TOWN OF WALLKILL – It was a harrowing couple of hours at the Galleria at Crystal Run in the Town of Wallkill Sunday afternoon when a man fired a gun into the floor on the second story of the mall.
Two people sustained minor lower leg injuries apparently from flying debris. They were treated at nearby Orange Regional Medical Center.
The busy mall was locked down shortly after 3 p.m. when the incident occurred as he walked toward Macy’s, said Wallkill Police Chief Robert Hertman.
“At this time we determined there was a male who was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and gray pants discharged one round from a handgun into the ground in front of the American Eagle store; that’s on the second level of the mall,” Hertman said.  He said they have not determined if the gunshot was accidental or intentional.
The shooter remains at large.
Wallkill and State Police along with Orange County Sheriff’s deputies, local police agencies from Orange and Rockland counties, along with the FBI, mall security and a State Police helicopter scoured the mall and the area. Police swept the inside of the mall for hours to determine if any other people were hiding, were injured or if there were other suspects.
The mall will be open for normal business today.
