NEWBURGH – St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh expects to break ground in 2018 on a project to not only expand the physical plant of its emergency department, but to enhance services.
Hospital President Joan Cusack McGuirk made the announcement on Tuesday saying that an $8 million state grant secured by Senator William Larkin (R, Cornwall-on-Hudson) made the project possible.
McGuirk heaped praise on Larkin but he said it is a win for the community.
“This isn’t Bill Larkin day; this is our day,” he said. “This is what we are put on this earth to do, to help somebody else.”
The enhancements will include an expanded triage and fast track space, expanding the number of ambulance bays, constructing a second story on top of the emergency room to create a 10-bed observation area for individuals who may feel ill, but may not require admission to the hospital, said McGuirk.
“We are incredibly proud to enhance emergency and trauma services to best meet the growing needs of the region,” she said.
Assemblyman Frank Skartados (D, Milton) said the hospital is a significant component of the community.  “It is the anchor for the City of Newburgh,” he said.
The project will take 18 months to complete and will enhance the services of the hospital, which is a member of the Montefiore Health Care System.
