PORT JERVIS – A shoe drive in the City of Port Jervis, named in memory of Josef Kucher, a shoemaker who was murdered in his shop in 2014, concludes on Wednesday.
The event, led by the Tri-State Chamber of Commerce, was a huge success last year. Chamber president and shoe drive chairwoman Mary Decker said they anticipated securing only 100 pairs of shoes in the first drive last year, but were pleasantly surprised.
“The outpouring of love for Mr. Kucher resulted in the unimaginable collection of over 1,000 pairs of shoes last year,” Decker said. “It created a legacy out of a tragedy that we hope will continue for years to come.”
The shoes, sneakers and boots will once again be distributed to needy children in Port Jervis.
The footwear may be dropped off at the chamber office, Mad Dog Liquor, The Gun Lady, Edward Jones Office or the Port Jervis Library.
