Langley elected Putnam County Sheriff after absentees counted

Well-attended official canvass confirms Langley as narrow winner

CARMEL – It’s now official. Robert Langley is the new sheriff in town.
Democrat Langley bested long-time Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith, a Republican, by 342 votes to wrestle the county’s top law enforcement position from the four-term incumbent.
On Tuesday night 1,204 absentee ballots were counted at the Board of Elections office in Carmel and Langley received 571 votes to the sheriff’s 564. The final tally: Langley,12,303; Smith,11,961.
Neither man attended the laborious count although both men had representatives there.
In other races, Putnam County Legislator William Gouldman of Putnam Valley defeated his Democratic challenger Anthony Williams. Gouldman received 72 absentee ballots to Williams’ 54.
District No.3 Legislator Toni Addonizio of Kent was reelected defeating Philip Tolmach. The incumbent received 112 absentee ballots to Tolmach’s 68.
Amy Sayegh of Mahopac ran unopposed for the District 8 seat. She received 65 absentee ballots.
