Particants assess the results of the drill

BUCHANAN – New York State conducted a radiological emergency preparedness exercise on Thursday involving the four counties in the Indian Point nuclear power plant zone – Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Orange.
Each county conducted their portion of the drill from their emergency services center.
Orange County Emergency Services Commissioner Brendan Casey said a specific simulated incident or event is addressed in each drill.
“The scenario they gave us was that one of their maintenance vehicles struck one of their cooling tanks so an amount of coolant spilled out,” Casey said.  “It’s non-contaminated coolant, water essentially but it is affecting the coolant system in system in reactor two. They go through a routine shutdown and run through their normal steps when some type of unusual event occurs at the site.”
Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus, who is the county’s incident commander, said a state inspector was present during the drill to assess it.
