YONKERS – A total of 31 offenders were targeted in a citywide drug sweep in the City of Yonkers with 25 defendants and another six still at large.
The suspects are charged with criminal sale and criminal possession of a controlled substance as felonies.
Westchester District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. said the sweep, “Operation
Trick or Treat,” targeted street level drug dealers who were selling
primarily heroin and crack cocaine. Undercover officers from Yonkers Police,
Westchester County Department of Public Safety and the Putnam County Sheriff’s
Office were used during the operation. Yonkers Police and the DEA made
several buys through those dealers in roughly half the cases while starting
in May 2016 and continued into May of this year.
“Operation Trick or Treat” is the second major heroin enforcement operation carried out since the Yonkers Police Department began the H.E.A.R.T. initiative in April 2016. The H.E.A.R.T. (Heroin Enforcement and Assistance Response Team) is designed to tackle the opioid crisis by focusing on a three-prong approach – prevention and education, assistance, and enforcement.
