Mid-Hudson unemployment stable

ALBANY – Unemployment in the Mid-Hudson Valley remained relatively
stable in September compared to the same month last year, according to
statistics from the state labor department.

Columbia County, with 3.6 percent, down from 3.7 percent, had the lowest
rate in the state.

Putnam and Ulster counties each had 4.3 percent joblessness. Putnam rose
by 0.1 percent and Ulster was down by 0.2 percent in September 2016.

Dutchess and Rockland counties each scored 4.4 percent unemployment in
September. In Dutchess, joblessness rose by 0.1 percent while in Rockland,
unemployment remained flat.

Orange, Sullivan and Westchester counties each had 4.5 percent joblessness
in September. Orange and Westchester counties’ rates were flat while
Sullivan County’s fell by 0.2 percent and Sullivan County’s
rate dropped by 0.2 percent when compared with September 2016.

Greene County’s rate of joblessness was 4.6 percent, down from 0.2
percent from the same month last year.

Region-wide in the Mid-Hudson, the unemployment was 4.5 percent, unchanged
from September 2016.

A number of area cities had higher unemployment rates that the counties.
The City of Mount Vernon had a 6.2 percent rate. The City of Newburgh
had a 5.6 percent rate of joblessness. The cities of Poughkeepsie and
Yonkers each scored 5.3 percent rates of unemployment. The Town of Haverstraw
had a 5.2 percent rate while the City of Middletown had a 5.0 percent
rate.
