Six arrested after traffic stop; loaded gun found in car

HAVERSTRAW – Six people from New York City and Long Island were arrested on Saturday in the Town of Haverstraw when the car in which they were riding ran a red light on Route 202 in the Town of Haverstraw.
The state trooper who initiated the traffic stop detected a strong odor of marijuana and asked all occupants to step out of the vehicle. Also on the scene were police from Haverstraw, State Park Police and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office.
As the occupants got out, the trooper spotted a loaded 9 mm Czech X54 handgun in plain view on the rear seat of the car. A marijuana cigarette was also located on a rear seat passenger.
Police charged all six with criminal possession of a weapon. They were identified as Anthony Holewinski, 22, of Islip Terrace; Kanel Taveras, 16, of Staten Island; Sarah Benfarhat, 18, of Bensonhurst; Isaac Desire, 20, of Islip Terrace; Marquis Morton, 22, of Brooklyn; and Joshua Joseph, 20, of Staten Island.  All were sent to the Rockland County Jail in lieu of bail.
