GOSHEN – A Wallkill man, who led police on a high-speed chase intentionally ramming into a police car, pled guilty to attempted assault on a police officer and operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs, both as felonies.
Hector Camacho, 45, led police on a high-speed chase on May 17 through the City and Town of Newburgh and Town of New Windsor.
At the time he pled guilty, he admitted that he knew police were trying to stop him when he drove at speeds of over 120 miles per hour on I-84 in the opposing lane of traffic. Camacho admitted intentionally ramming his car into one of the pursing Newburgh City Police cars while on Route 52 in the Town of Newburgh in an attempt to injure the sergeant driving the car and evade police. Camacho also admitted driving under the influence of heroin during the high-speed pursuit.
No police officers were injured in the incidents.
At the time Camacho pled guilty, prosecutors said that when he is sentenced in January they would recommend seven years in state prison for attempted aggravated assault on a police officer and a concurrent one to three years for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs.
