MIDDLETOWN – The majority of water meters in Middletown have been replaced; however, despite the mandatory nature of the program, there are still those who have not been cooperative with the company hired by the city to convert to the automatic reading devices.
City Public Works Commissioner Jacob Tawil said water customers who do not cooperate – and some have not responded to four attempts – will face the consequences.
They are faced with two options. One is to shut the water off to residents, which we don’t want to do, although we have sent out notification in writing to each and every one. It is mandatory replacement,” Tawil said. “The other option is a water meter reading surcharge.”  And that could amount to a $200 fee tacked on every time the meter is read.
The meter conversion program began in April and the company, Professional Meters, Inc., hopes to complete the project by the end of October.
