MARLBORO – The top grossing
movie this weekend was “Happy Death Day,” pulling in $26.5
million at the box office. It beat out “Blade Runner 2049.”
What makes “Happy Death Day” special to the Hudson Valley is that the man who wrote it, Scott Lobdell, is a native of Marlboro, a 1978 graduate of Marlboro High School.
Lobdell calls his hit movie “comedy-horror.” It is about a young woman who is brutally murdered and relives the crime each day until she figures out who killed her.
“The high concept is they are saying it is ‘Ground Hog’s Day’ meets ‘Scream’,” he said.
Lobdell’s movie premiered nationwide this weekend with a local showing at the Poughkeepsie Galleria attended by 50 of his relatives. He flew in from California, where he lives now, to enjoy it with his family.

The movie stars newcomer, Jessica Rothe, in the lead.
“Not only is she amazing, but as a result of this, she is already going to be staring in Universal’s ‘Valley Girl’ musical,” he said.
Lobdell predicted that Rothe will be the next Julia Roberts.
What’s next in movie writing for Lobdell?
“It’s going to be another thriller like ‘Happy Death Day.’  It’s going to be in that same genre.”
Lobdell is no stranger to the world of entertainment. He has been a comic
book writer for some 30 years, having written the “X-Men”
series in the 1990s for Marvel Comics and is currently writing DC Comics’
“Redhead and the Outlaws” series.
