MOUNT VERNON – The City of Mount Vernon Board of Estimate approved $4.57 million in bonding to buy the police department’s first-ever police body cameras, enhance the number of street cameras, purchase new and advanced communications equipment.
Mayor Richard Thomas said the investment will bring the city’s public safety efforts into the 21st century.
“This is a tremendous leap forward for Mount Vernon because we are moving from loose leaf binders and Bic pens to true technology that emanates from the Cloud and we are really excited because not just being millennial but being someone now in the position to make government relevant and essentially remove government from being an obstacle by making it work for people,” the mayor said.
The public safety investments will also include two new fire trucks and a command vehicle.
Mount Vernon is a city of four square miles with a population of about 72,000.
