ALBANY – The New York State Thruway Authority Board Monday approved the purchase of an enhanced GPS program for its fleet of 235 heavy-duty plows for the 2017 snow and ice season.
The system will allow for real-time monitoring during plowing operations, including route tracking, air and pavement temperature and deicing material application rates for each truck involved in storm response.
The new system is expected to be fully installed by the end of the year.
“The Thruway Authority does everything necessary to keep roads clear of snow and ice during winter storms, and this advanced GPS technology will not only provide improved real-time reporting of conditions, it will enhance our response to keep roads drivable and ensure motorists are kept safe,” said Thruway Acting Executive Director Matthew Driscoll.
