MIDDLETOWN – The first project to be funded by Middletown’s $10 million state Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant is underway.
The former Woolworth building on North Street will be converted into a covered mini-mall connecting the business district to the future Erie Way Park at the end of what will become the downtown spur of the city’s Heritage Trail.
Demolition of the center portion of the building began on Tuesday. It will be reconfigured to feature interior retail space for boutique shops.
The city was the only municipality in the Mid-Hudson region to be awarded a $10 million redevelopment grant earlier this year.
