PORT JERVIS – The current annual salary for the part-time mayor of the City of Port Jervis is $20,000. It has been at that level for years.
Mayor Kelly Decker said the job consumes much more than part of his time and he is recommending the city council approve placing before city residents a referendum to double that salary.
“There is a lot of self-sacrifice that you have to put into this job in order for it to be done correctly and hopefully we can set it up so that the next mayor that would come in would at least be compensated properly for the work that they will do,” he said. “The salary has not gone up in 15 if not 20 years.”
Decker also believes council member pay of $5,000 should be increased, but he is not sure if current council members would approve placing it before voters, given the city’s continued precarious financial situation.
